Trivias about the Philippine School for the Deaf

The Philippine School for the Deaf, formerly known as the School for the Deaf and Blind, is the pioneer school for the handicapped in the country and in Asia. It is a semi-residential school and the only government owned institution for the deaf in the country.

It started in 1907 when Dr. David P. Barrows, the Director of Education in the Philippines invited to the country Miss Delia Delight Rice of Columbus, Ohio, a teacher of the deaf and daughter of deaf parents. The program started with a class of three pupils from the provinces (two deaf and one blind) in a house in Ermita, Manila.

The Manila Central University had very humble beginnings. In 1903, at the request of several students from the University of Sto. Tomas and other individuals, Dr. Alejandro Albert organized a private review class. This review class developed into the Escuela de Farmacia del Liceo de Manila in 1904, with Dr. Albert as director, a post he held until 1915 when the Liceo was transformed into the Manila College of Pharmacy with Messrs. Albert, Alfredo L. Guerrero, Antonio C. Llamas, Feliciano Paterno and Filemon Tanchoco, all faculty members of the institution as incorporators.

This year marks the Golden Jubilee of the founding of the Liceo de Cagayan University. Founded in 1955 by the late Atty. Rodolfo N. Pelaez of Cagayan de Oro City and his wife, Elsa P. Pelaez of Cebu City, the Liceo offers a wide scope of faculties and programs, among others: the College of Arts and Sciences, Education, Commerce, Engineering, Law, Information Technology, Nursing, Criminology, Radiologic Technology, Physical Therapy, Graduate Studies and Basic Education Department.

Central Philippine University is a non-stock, non-profit Christian institution of higher learning, where a well-rounded program of education is offered under influences that strengthen faith and build up character. It was founded in 1905 as the Jaro Industrial School by missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. It started as an elementary vocational school for poor boys who worked for their board and tuition. Dr. William O.Valentine, the first principal, worked hard to have the school incorporated and recognized by the government.

The turn of the twentieth century brought about dramatic changes in the life of the Philippines. In I898, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States. Then in 1902 the Philippine Education Act established the system of public schools, and no religious instruction was allowed in those schools. There was a great need for English-speaking teachers, new Catholic schools and missionaries as most of the Spanish missionaries and clergy had left the country.

In 1928, a group of eminent educators led by Dr. Nicanor Reyes, Sr. founded the Institute of Accountancy. And in November 5, 1933, Far Eastern College, a school offering liberal arts courses, merged with the Institute of Accountancy to bolster multidisciplinary degrees in accountancy, business, finance, the arts and sciences, technology, and law.

The San Fernando High School, the given name of La Union High School when it opened its doors on January 19, 1903 to fifty-five students, was the first secondary school established in La Union during the administration of Senor Joaquin Ortega, the first civil governor of the province. Classes then were held in buildings made of stones.

CENTRO ESCOLAR UNIVERSITY 1907-2007: The First 100 Years

Centre Escolar University was established on June 3, 1907 by Doha Librada Avelino and Dona Carmen de Luna for the instruction and training of the youth in all branches of the arts and sciences. With some benches, a single blackboard and a few books, the two educators steadfastly nurtured a dream of establishing a nationalistic center of learning for Filipino women. The first college, that of Pharmacy, opened in 1921.
